Professional Review

Empires of the Undergrowth is a simulation and strategy game developed by Slug Disco Studios for the PC platform. Download Empires of the Undergrowth, a simulation strategy, and create and fight not for planets or countries, but for nests and insect hives — ants, wasps, bees, and the like.

Graphics: 3

Empires of the Undergrowth looks more than decent, but there are certain complaints about the interface from a purely aesthetic point of view – it is rather inconsiderable, and there is something to improve. Overall the game turned out to be even more pleasing visually than expected. The music is quite peaceful – simple melodies played on the piano. The voices of scientists, who periodically comment on your progress, are very good.

Gameplay: 4

Empires of the Undergrowth gameplay doesn’t bore, and the game itself doesn’t turn into a routine because you don’t go through one mission after another just to get through – you do it, keeping in mind a quite clear goal (just like an ant) – you need to collect resources, return with them to your colony, and continue to develop it.

In general, according to the Empires of the Undergrowth review, the gameplay of Empires of the Undergrowth is quite simple, but not primitive – you collect food as well as organize workers and soldiers in the right proportions. And then you pave another couple of tunnels, find more food, fight with enemies that come your way (other ants, centipedes, spiders), etc. Also, do not forget to protect the Queen, because without the Queen the colony is doomed.

Controls: 4

The controls of the game are easy and very intuitive. For the convenience of controlling units, you can divide them into several groups, for each of which you use your own pheromone – that is, roughly speaking, give unique orders. What to catch, who to kill, and where to carry it all then – the ants know even without the player’s help.

Replay Value: 4

The Empires of the Undergrowth full game has a high replay value. Unlike other similar games, there is a plot, albeit a rather static one. You manage a colony of ants, which is monitored by two scientists – they bring you up to date, giving clues, and they will arrange tests for you so that you don’t get bored.

The Bottom Line

Despite the fact that Empires of the Undergrowth is a recent game, it is very entertaining. There are no bugs, and you will have enough content for 6–8 hours. This is the first game since 1991 which allows you to control an ant colony. But this, of course, is not the most important thing – the most important thing is that playing Empires of the Undergrowth is fun, interesting, and even informative.

Conclusion

Everything works great in Empires of the Undergrowth. You have the main colony, the tree of technology, and the ability to pass missions to earn resources. Missions differ from each other enough so download Empires of the Undergrowth and you can be sure that you will not get bored.

Pros : Interesting missions;
Good graphics;
Various challenges that add diversity to the gameplay.

Cons : Not enough content;
A primitive plot;
The lack of a combination of hotkeys for some actions.
