Professional Review

Banished is a game that requires you to build a city starting from zero with just a couple of exiled people. Download Banished from Steam for your PC to give the exiled a new home!

Graphics: 5

The graphics look nice and definitely help you enjoy the game. They have a slightly cartoony look, which seems to work remarkably well for Banished. We find it amazing that the game is not at all hungry for processing power, given how crisp and detailed the graphics are. The graphics promote a calm, relaxed attitude, so Banished could be a great game for you to unwind after a long day at work.

Gameplay: 4

Starting your first game in Banished is very exciting because you get to build an entire city from the ground up with nothing more than a dozen people. They are your most valuable resource, and you have to make sure they stay healthy and happy -  otherwise, there won’t be anyone left to build your city. The settlers can learn different jobs, get married, have kids, and retire. They are also eventually going to die, so you need to make sure there’s enough population growth for your people not to die out. The only problem is, at some point you can’t discover and use any new technologies and skills, and your city’s development stalls quite rapidly.

Controls: 5

The control scheme in Banished is quite simple, so there’s hardly any learning curve for new players. The controls are well-designed, intuitive, and easy to remember, so you can dive straight into the building and planning without having to spend hours memorizing all the different buttons and their respective actions. The controls are very precise, so you won’t accidentally place a building in the wrong spot because of them.

Replay Value: 4

True fans of Banished can come back to the game and keep building new cities for weeks and maybe even months thanks to the randomly generated maps. You get a different map each time you start the game, so you’re going to get different outcomes even if you try building the exact same city twice. Casual gamers are probably going to build a couple of different cities and call it a day afterwards, but even so, time spent in Banished is undoubtedly time well-spent.

The Bottom Line

Banished is fun to play, and it doesn’t feel rushed or too intense despite getting quite challenging at times. This is a typical city-building strategy game reinvented to include some new features and exclude the boring cliches everyone is already used to seeing in such games (having your settlement attacked by an enemy tribe/clan/nation isn’t exactly new, is it?).

Conclusion

Download Banished if you want to experience a city building strategy in a completely different way and don’t mind the somewhat limited growth possibilities for your city.

Pros : Nice graphics;
Relaxed gameplay;
Challenging and requiring strategic thinking at times.

Cons : Might get boring after your city has reached a certain level of development;
The skill and technology trees are not very developed.
